Amitabha School hands over charity show proceeds, adopts red panda to support ‘My Child From Wild’ initiative

GANGTOK, : In a heartwarming stride toward wildlife conservation, Amitabha School has officially adopted a red panda from the Himalayan Zoological Park under the State’s acclaimed initiative, ‘My Child From Wild’.

This symbolic adoption, made in the name of the entire school, reflects Amitabha’s deep commitment to nurturing empathy and environmental responsibility among its students, a press release informs.

As part of its ongoing mission, the school recently hosted a charity premiere of the short film ‘Opang’ at Vajra Cinema Hall, Gangtok. The July 10 event was held in collaboration with the Forest department and the Himalayan Zoological Park to raise funds for support animal care and conservation education.

Amitabha School director Pema Dolkar Thakarpa, coordinators and students handed the collection of Rs. 4,64,440 from the charity film ‘Opang’ to Forest joint director Dechen Lachungpa for the ‘My Child From Wild’ initiative.

Adding to the conservation momentum, Kaizen Tshewang Kaleon, a student of Amitabha School, represented the institution at the Sikkim Paryavaran Parva Celebration held at Manan Kendra, Gangtok.

Speaking on the theme of adopting wild animals, Kaizen highlighted the school’s vision: “Adoption is not just about care—it’s about connection. Through ‘My Child From Wild,’ we are learning to be guardians of nature, not just observers.”

With initiatives like these, Amitabha School continues to prove that compassion, creativity, and commitment can go hand in hand in building a greener, kinder world, the release states.

Under the ‘My Child From Wild’ initiative, one can adopt an animal in the Himalayan Zoological Park, Bulbuley and sponsor the particular animal’s upkeep and care. Several individuals have come forward to adopt the park’s animals.

Amitabha School, in its 10^th year of educational services, is located at Nam Nam side of Gangtok. The school has 300 students and presently up to Class 6.
