Beware of unknown calls & investment promises: Gangtok & Jorethang residents lose huge money to scammers

GANGTOK,: In another case of online fraud, a MG Marg resident lost about Rs. 11 lakh after being duped by an unknown person who was impersonating as a Mumbai Crime Branch police officer.

The victim had received a call on June 23 from an unknown person, claiming to be a Mumbai Crime Branch police officer, who told her that she had made fraud transactions from her bank account and a fraud case is being registered against her.

According to the victim, the fraudster sought money from her to settle the matter or police will arrest her and her husband and seize all their properties.

Due to panic and fear, the victim made two transactions on June 24 and 25 to a fraudulent account number registered in name of a private entity, Kalupur, Ahmedabad. Later, she realized that she has been trapped in a fake call leading to a fraud transaction done by her.

The victim then lodged a complaint at Gangtok Sadar police station on July 6 where an FIR was registered against unknown person (s) under IPC sections 384/419/420.

Another similar case of online cheating has been registered at Jorethang police station on July 6 where a Jorethang resident is said to have lost around Rs. 4.31 crore to scammers running a fake investment scheme.

In his complaint, the Jorethang businessman mentioned that he had joined a WhatsApp group in March which was coordinated by two persons. Subsequently, he was invited to join another Whatsapp group where people claiming to be from a high-profile investment company directed him to invest in shares and IPOs via an app, with promises of high returns.

The victim deposited Rs. 4.87 crore into various accounts but received only Rs. 56 lakh in return. After the scheme concluded, the fraudsters demanded additional fees and then ceased communication.

In his complaint, the victim stated that he was in continuous contact with one member of the purported investment group through WhatsApp till May 7. After this date, there was no response, and the trading app was no longer functional.

The victim complained that he has been cheated and his due amount of Rs. 4.31 crore has not been paid to him.
