DARJEELING, : Different political and
non-political organizations in Darjeeling today condemned the attack on Sudan
Gurungon late Thursday evening. They also demanded that those behind the attack
be arrested.
Sudan is the president of
Trained Unemployed Youth Welfare Organization and has been raising his voice
against the alleged Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) teacher
recruitment scam. He has claimed that he had been attacked for this reason.
Presently, a case is going on in
the High Court regarding recruitment of teachers in the GTA. The High Court has
questioned the legality of the appointment of around 313 teachers in 2019 by
the GTA. The next date of hearing is June 17.
Dawa Lepcha, a member of an
apolitical body People's Forum, said, “We had tea in a shop after which we went
our separate ways. He called us back and we found him bleeding. It must have
been around 7:30 pm yesterday. We then took him to the police station which
asked us to take him to the hospital.”
Sudan Gurung was allegedly
attacked below the Motor Stand area,while he was on his way home towards
Botanical Garden area. The area is in the heart of Darjeeling town. With head
injuries, he is currently admitted at Darjeeling Sadar hospital.
According to Gurung, a group of unknown men attacked him. He said that one of
them aimed for his neck which he dodged with the blow,suffering injury on his
head.
BJP’s Sanjeev Lama said, “We
demand the arrest of those behind the incident. There might be powerful people
behind it and may try to supress it. We will come out on the streets it justice
is not delivered."
Noman Rai of Gorkha Janmukti Morcha
maintained that some powerful people were behind the attack and that they
should be arrested.
CPRM students wing leader Aryan
Rai said, “This is a politically motivated attack and it was an attempt to
murder. The attackers tried to hit the neck but with Sudan ducking he was cut
in the head with seven stitches done on it.”
The organisations also met the
police today demanding that those behind the incident be arrested.
On the other hand, the Indian
Gorkha Janshakti Front (IGJF) put up posters at Chowk Bazar with the same demand
