CAP Sikkim holds protest rally against political violence

GANGTOK, : The Citizen Action Party (CAP) Sikkim organized a rally on Tuesday, marching from Amdo Golai along Indira Bypass Road to the District Administrative Centre (DAC) area in Sichey, Gangtok. The rally was held to protest against recent incidents of political violence in the State, said the CAP Sikkim.

Led by CAP Sikkim president Ganesh Kumar Rai, the march witnessed participation from party leaders, members, and supporters.

Speaking to the media, Rai stated that the purpose of the rally was to demand the restoration of true democracy in Sikkim, which he claimed has been undermined by rising political violence. He also called for justice for CAP Sikkim supporters who were allegedly attacked a week ago, with no arrests made so far.

According to Rai, CAP Sikkim had submitted a formal complaint to the State chief secretary seeking immediate action against those involved in the assault on party members. However, a week has passed without any response or action from the authorities, he said.

He further criticized the current government, alleging that instead of working for development and the welfare of citizens, it has been increasingly suppressing dissent and oppressing those who speak out including voters who brought them to power.

Rai emphasized that CAP Sikkim represents the voice of ordinary people and has launched a democratic movement aimed at protecting citizens’ rights and restoring democratic values in the State. He noted that participants in the rally marched despite the rain, demonstrating their commitment to justice and opposition to what he described as ongoing suppression by the government.

He also stressed that in a democracy, the people are sovereign, and the ruling party must act in the interest of all citizens. Programs and policies, he said, should focus on holistic development and the welfare of every individual, not just the party’s supporters.

Rai called upon citizens across the State to rise above political affiliations and join CAP Sikkim’s movement for the establishment of genuine democracy. Without such collective action, he warned, people would continue to face fear, threats, and systemic deprivation under the current government.
