CAP Sikkim writes to Odisha CM seeking immediate justice for assaulted Sikkim resident

GANGTOK,: The Citizen Action Party (CAP) Sikkim has expressed its deep concern and outrage over the brutal assault on Wegen Sherpa, a differently-abled resident of Sikkim, who is now fighting for his life after an alleged attack by a traffic police officer in Gopalpur, Odisha. This incident was reported online at odishatv.in, said the CAP Sikkim in a press statement Monday.

This inhumane and unjustifiable act has not only caused Sherpa severe physical trauma but also shaken the faith of countless citizens who expect protection and respect from law enforcement officers, said the CAP Sikkim in its email to the Odisha Chief Minister’s Office.

As per reports, Sherpa and his friends were returning from Gopalpur sea beach on Sunday when they were stopped by traffic police. Shockingly, Sherpa was allegedly struck on the head with a lathi by a traffic officer without provocation, leaving him unconscious and critically injured. He was rushed to AIIMS Bhubaneswar, where he remains in a critical condition, yet local police and traffic authorities have remained silent on this matter.

In its letter to the Odhisa Chief Minister, the CAP Sikkim demanded immediate and stringent action against the officer responsible for this heinous act, holding him accountable for the assault on Sherpa. Such behavior by law enforcement personnel is a gross abuse of power and a serious violation of human rights, the party said, demanding that a transparent and thorough investigation into the incident by Odisha’s law enforcement authorities to ensure justice is served.

The CAP Sikkim also demanded an intervention by the Government of Odisha to address this incident at the highest level. We urge the Odisha government to ensure a fair and expeditious investigation, taking strict measures to prevent any recurrence of such incidents and safeguarding the rights and dignity of all citizens, including those from outside the State, the party said.

The CAP Sikkim added that it stands in solidarity with the victim and his family in their fight for justice. The CAP Sikkim will continue to monitor this situation closely, ensuring that appropriate actions are taken and that Sherpa receives the justice he deserves, the party said.
