GANGTOK, : The fortnight-long Sikkim
Paryavaran Parva concluded today with a State-level event organised by Forest
department at Manan Kendra, Gangtok. Chief Minister P.S. Golay attended the
event as the chief guest.
In his address, the Chief
Minister appreciated the commendable performance of the Forest and Environment
department and emphasized the importance of active participation by the people
and stakeholders of Sikkim in all forest and environmental conservation
programs.
He announced that marking
orders for matured trees in private holdings would be issued upon request by
landowners for commercial purposes. However, he stressed that this must be accompanied
by a rule mandating the plantation of new saplings, ensuring a sustainable and
participatory approach toward forestry and environmental management.
The Chief Minister lauded
several departmental initiatives, including the launch of online marking orders,
a digital check-post system and Aadhaar-based biometric attendance implemented
across most departments. He particularly appreciated the implementation of the
Citizens' Charter, which he said has brought transparency, foresight and timely
facilitation of services for citizens.
Forest ministerPintsoNamgyalLepcha
highlighted the significance of environmental preservation and applauded the
department’s performance. He urged departmental officials to implement
government programs diligently and ensure timely delivery of services to the
public.
PCCF-cum-principal secretary of
Forest and Environment department, Dr. Pradeep Kumar, briefly elaborated on the
department's activities, the significance of Sikkim ParyavaranParva and the
citizen-centric green governance initiatives undertaken. He shared that the
ParyavaranParva featured a wide range of events including audio-visual
screenings on Sikkim Paryavaran, zoo animal adoption under “My Child from the
Wild” initiative, plantation drives under ‘MeroRukhMeroSantati’
and ‘MeroBatoMero Bot’ and environmental awareness skits at both State and
district levels.
On the occasion, the Chief
Minister distributed “Green Fixed Deposits” of Rs. 10,800 each to 18 new-borns
from six districts under ‘Sikkim ShishuSamridhiYojana’ as part of
‘MeroRukhMeroSantati’ initiative.
‘SorengChakung Road Gang’ was
named the “Best Road Gang” for implementing ‘MeroBatoMero Bot’ during 2024-25.
All 12 members of the group received a cash award of Rs. 50,000 each.
Under ‘MeroRukhMeroSantati’, three
best ASHA workers, namely, Karma Dem Bhutia, Hem LataSubba and SabitaDarjee,
were presented Rs. 10,800 each.
Government Senior Secondary
School, Tharpu won Green Quiz 2025, while PM SHRI Government Senior Secondary
School, Mangan; Government Senior Secondary School Kewzing; and PM SHRI Government
Senior Secondary School School, Pelling stood second, third and fourth
respectively.
The program also witnessed
presentation of donations to Himalayan Zoological Park, Gangtok under the “My
Child from Wild” adoption program. The zoo director received a cheque of Rs. 10
lakh from Alkem Laboratories Limited, Rs. 5 lakh from SISCO Bank, Gangtok, Rs.
50,000 from Amitabha School, Gangtok, and Rs. 7,000 from family of Mesa Rai.
The 3rd edition of Sikkim
ParyavaranParva, held from July 1 to 14, was celebrated across the State with
the theme “Leave a Green Legacy”. The fortnight-long green festival included a
variety of environment-focused activities and community engagement programs.
