GANGTOK,: The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) has recorded a significant increase in both passenger traffic and revenue for the financial year 2025-26.

During FY 2025–26, passenger footfall rose to 2.15 lakh, while earnings exceeded Rs. 25 crore. This marks a growth of approximately 17.72% in passenger traffic and 14.71% in revenue compared to the previous year. The figures highlight the growing popularity and sustained demand for the iconic “Heritage Train,” while also contributing significantly to local employment and tourism-driven economic growth in the Darjeeling region.

According to the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), this impressive growth has been achieved through a multi-pronged strategy focused on enhancing passenger experience while preserving the historic charm of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. Key initiatives include curated tourism experiences, tailored services, strengthened stakeholder engagement, and continuous improvements in infrastructure and passenger comfort.

NFR further added that the rising patronage of the DHR is playing a vital role in supporting livelihoods and promoting tourism across the Darjeeling hills.

“The strong performance in FY 2025-26 reaffirms the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway’s status as one of India’s most treasured railway legacies and a symbol of rich cultural and engineering heritage,” the NFR said, reiterating its commitment to preserving this iconic marvel for future generations.

Recognized globally as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the DHR holds a unique place among India’s historic mountain railways. The “Heritage Train” continues to attract tourists and railway enthusiasts from around the world with its scenic beauty, rich legacy, and distinctive travel experience. Recent passenger-friendly initiatives, improved services, and tourism-focused efforts have further enhanced its appeal, strengthening its position as one of the most sought-after heritage rail journeys, the NFR added.
