GANGTOK,: Diamond Harbour FC, Kolkata, registered a comfortable 3-1 victory over Inter Kashi FC on Saturday to book a spot in the semifinals of the 41st Governor’s Gold Cup at Paljor Stadium.

Inter Kashi FC, the I-League champions, fielded a youth side that played with pace and intent. However, the experience and quality of the Diamond Harbour players soon gave them control of the match.

After missing a couple of clear chances, Diamond Harbour broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute with a fine header from Narohari Srestha.

Inter Kashi FC drew level almost immediately after the restart, with Yaman Sheoran scoring an excellent goal in the 47th minute against the run of play.

The Kolkata side responded by raising their tempo, and Srestha restored the lead with another well-timed header in the 56th minute. Aquib Nawab sealed the win with a neat finish to make it 3-1 for Diamond Harbour FC.

The match was somewhat underwhelming for the audience and disappointing for the organisers, as Inter Kashi FC had received direct entry into the quarterfinals in this prestigious tournament by virtue of being I-League champions. Defending champions Northeast United, East Bengal FC and Church Boys FC Nepal were the other three big names who had placed directly in the quarterfinal round.

However, Inter Kashi FC sent its junior squad instead of its regular players. While the young team showed promise and talent, they were no match for the more experienced Kolkata side.

Star Mall director Rupesh Chaudhari was the chief guest for the match. He handed over the key of a Royal Enfield motorbike to Sikkim Football Association (SFA) president Menla Ethenpa on the occasion.

The bike would be presented to the ‘Player of the Tournament’.

The second quarterfinal match will be played on Sunday afternoon between Rajasthan United FC and Church Boys United of Nepal.
