GEYZING,: Innovator Bissu Hang Limboo, known for creating user-friendly tools and devices, has unveiled his latest invention designed to simplify the process of making Selroti, a popular traditional Sikkimese delicacy.
Bissu Hang, who hails from Bermiok in West Sikkim, has earned a reputation for crafting practical farming tools and other technology-driven appliances. This time, he brings his ingenuity to the kitchen.
The newly invented Selroti device was exhibited today at Geyzing Bazaar in a public demonstration that allowed visitors to try their hand at making the Selroti with ease. The exhibition was inaugurated by Geyzing Nagar Panchayat president Devendra Sharma and will conclude on Sunday.
Bissu Hang’s new innovation, which appears to be a fusion of a ladle or a jug with a long handle comes with an assurance that Selroti making is no more an arduous affair and should greatly help those who are new and want to learn the intricate art of making Selroti. Any interested person can visit the camp and try their hand on Selroti making with the help of the newly introduced kitchenware.
Most of the visitors, who tried the new equipment today, praised the invention as innovative and useful, noting that even beginners could quickly get a grasp of the technique, though some found room for improvement.
However, not everyone is fully sold on the modern approach to Selroti making. Some visitors expressed concern over the potential impact of such innovations on traditional practices, suggesting that using tools rather than hands may detract from the cultural essence of making Selroti. “It’s amazing that it’s easier, but there’s something about the traditional method that makes it special,” remarked one visitor.
Bissu Hang, however, remains optimistic. He expressed that his invention aims to make Selroti accessible to every household, regardless of skill level or the availability of professional Selroti makers. “My effort is to simplify Selroti making so that everyone can enjoy this traditional dish even without prior experience,” he said.
Bissu Hang intends to expand the availability of the Selroti tool throughout Sikkim and possibly beyond. He also acknowledged the tremendous support he has received from the State government, which has been instrumental in advancing his projects. “I have been provided an ample support by the state government and the society. I am indebted to them", said Bissu Hang, adding that he is committed to using the support he receives to benefit the people of Sikkim.
