SORENG, (IPR): The 20th State Level Boxing Tournament (Sub-Junior Boys and Girls) and the 21st State Level Boxing Tournament (Youth, Men and Women) commenced today at the Rumbuk Secondary School Playground, Soreng. The tournament is being held from 16th to 19th January and is being organised by the Sikkim Youngsters Boxing Club (SYBC), Rumbuk, in association with the Soreng District Boxing Association, and in collaboration with the Sikkim Amateur Boxing Association (SABA), Gangtok.
The inaugural programme was graced by Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) Indra Hang Subba as the chief guest.
Addressing the gathering, Subba expressed his gratitude to Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang and MLA (Daramdin) and Speaker, Sikkim Legislative Assembly, MN Sherpa for their continued support towards sports development in the State. He stated that the State government remains committed to the growth and welfare of sportspersons. He appreciated the organising committee for successfully hosting the event and highlighted Sikkim’s achievements over the past 50 years since attaining Statehood. He encouraged the youth of SYBC to carry forward the vision and legacy of the club, established in 2008, and emphasised the importance of quality, capability, and institutionalisation for the progress of sports and sportspersons. He further urged everyone to think sustainably and preserve resources for future generations.
President of SABA, Jaslal Pradhan, in his address, commended the organisers for conducting an outdoor boxing tournament. He shared the achievements of SABA and encouraged young boxers of Sikkim to aim for representing the state and the nation, including participation in the Commonwealth Games scheduled to be held in India in 2030.
Vice president of SYBC, Mizoram Subba, briefed the gathering on the history and establishment of the Sikkim Youngsters Boxing Club.
The chief guest and guest of honour unveiled the souvenir book of SYBC.
The organising committee presented souvenirs to the chief guest and guests of honour as a token of appreciation.
Participants and coaches from all six districts of Sikkim—Gangtok, Pakyong, Mangan, Namchi, Gyalshing, and Soreng are taking part in the tournament.
The programme was attended by advisors and chairpersons, zilla panchayat and panchayat members, SABA officials, OSDs, retired officers, headmasters and headmistresses from various schools, and officers and officials from different line departments.
