Man fatally assaults 4-year-old in Gyalshing District

GANGTOK,: A four-year-old boy was allegedly fatally hit with a spearhead by his relative on June 10 evening hours at Upper Bermoik in Gyalshing district.

The 42-year-old accused, identified as Pourna Bahadur Lepcha has been arrested by police and a FIR was registered at Dentam police station, informed Gyalshing SP Tshering Sherpa.

As per preliminary investigations, it was revealed that the accused was reportedly suffering from mental instability. He suddenly attacked the child with a spearhead, which he used to keep beneath his pillow due to a belief that it helped ward off evil spirits, as per police.

The victim had been brought to Rinchenpong PHC at around 5:55 pm on June 10. The child had sustained a lacerated wound measuring 4 cm × 1 cm below the left clavicle and was bleeding actively from the nose and mouth.

Upon being brought to the ER, the child showed no signs of life and was declared brought dead at 1745 hours by the attending Medical Officer at Rinchenpong PHC.

Based on the aforesaid information, Kaluk PS registered a Zero FIR Case under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023 against Purna Bahadur Lepcha and subsequently transferred to Dentam Police Station for investigation, as the place of occurrence falls within its jurisdiction.

Accordingly, a regular case vide Dentam Police Station case FIR No. 06/2026 dated 10/06/2026 u/s 103(1) has been registered on the basis of the Zero FIR and was taken up for investigation.
