Mother’s Day: An Attempt to Repay an Unpayable Debt

Mother: The Foundation of Creation and the Embodiment of Love

 “Mother” is perhaps the most sacred, melodious, and glorious word in the world. It is not merely a word; rather, it represents a vast universe, immeasurable love, and the very source of creation. A mother is the person who gives us the opportunity to enter this beautiful universe and become a part of this living world.

Being born on this Earth is a rare privilege, and it is a mother who makes this privilege possible. Therefore, after God, a mother is the first person to whom we owe our gratitude. When a child first opens their eyes to the world, the first face they see and the first word that emerges from their lips is often “Mother.” The magic, warmth, and comfort contained in the word “Mother” cannot be found in anything else in the world. As the mother of creation and a child’s first teacher, a mother is the foundation of the continuity of life.

Scientists say that even before a person comes into their mother’s womb, when their mother herself was still in the womb of their grandmother, the mother already carried the egg that would eventually become her child. In this way, the power of motherhood has carried and nurtured us from generation to generation.

A mother is the great force who brings a new life into the world after enduring countless hardships for nine months, offering her own blood, sweat, and strength. Even after giving birth, she considers it her duty to protect her child without caring about her own hunger, thirst, or sleep.

A mother is also her child’s first school and first teacher. A child learns to speak, walk, eat, and behave well in society from their mother. The values and education imparted by a mother lay the foundation for a person’s future.

The Embodiment of Selfless Love and Sacrifice

There may be some degree of self-interest hidden in many relationships in the world, but the relationship between a mother and her child is completely selfless. No matter how successful, wealthy, or poor a child becomes, a mother’s love never diminishes.

Staying awake all night when her child is sick, and feeding her child even when she herself remains hungry—such sacrifices are possible only for a mother. In the presence of a mother’s affection and compassion, all the wealth and riches of the world seem insignificant.

Religious and Cultural Significance

In our Sanatan culture and scriptures, a mother has been given a position even higher than that of God. The ancient saying, “Janani Janmabhumishcha Swargadapi Gariyasi,” means that one’s mother and motherland are greater than heaven itself.

A mother is regarded as a living embodiment of the divine. Serving one’s mother and keeping her happy is considered one of the greatest forms of duty, devotion, and pilgrimage in life.

Conclusion

The word “Mother” is complete in itself. No one can ever fully repay the debt of sacrifice, penance, and devotion that a mother makes for her children.

Sadly, in the name of modernity, there is an increasing tendency these days to leave elderly parents in old-age homes. This is deeply painful and reflects a loss of human sensitivity.

Understanding the dignity and greatness of motherhood, it is the supreme duty of every child to always treat their mother with respect, honour, and love. The smile on a mother’s face is perhaps the greatest happiness and wealth in the world.

Having deeply understood and felt the immense greatness of motherhood, our respected leader and Hon’ble Chief Minister, Shri P. S. Tamang (Golay), has dedicated 10 August every year as “Mother’s Day”, a day devoted to mothers.

The idea behind this important initiative carries a profound sense of humanity: that no mother’s hands should ever remain empty; that mothers should never have to struggle to meet their basic needs; that they should never have to stretch out their hands before anyone even for their smallest necessities; that mothers should always have enough to share with others; and that they should always remain like Goddess Annapurna, continuously giving to others and living with the spirit of “Santa Claus,” bringing happiness and nourishment to everyone around them.

With this deep human sensitivity and concern for the dignity of mothers, our leader has launched this significant initiative. It is perhaps the first programme of its kind in our country.

Through this initiative, thousands of mothers have already benefited. It has become one of the most popular public welfare programmes of the SKM government.

For conceiving and implementing such a visionary initiative, our respected Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri P. S. Tamang (Golay) deserves our sincere appreciation and gratitude.
