GANGTOK,: Lok Sabha MP (Sikkim) Indra Hang Subba on Tuesday met the Minister
of State for Education, Jayant Chaudhary, and submitted a letter seeking reconsideration
of the inclusion of Rai, Sherpa, Tamang and Gurung languages as second
vernacular subjects in CBSE Classes XI and XII.
During
the meeting, the Lok Sabha MP highlighted that these languages are already
offered at the Class X level under CBSE, with the necessary academic framework,
curriculum and teaching ecosystem in place, a press release informs.
Indra
Hang emphasised that extending their availability to the senior secondary level
would be a natural progression and would provide students an opportunity to
continue studying their regional and indigenous languages beyond Class X.
He
also pointed out that students opting for these languages generally do so in
place of other subjects and therefore concerns regarding additional examination
scheduling and logistical challenges may not be as significant as anticipated.
He
urged the Ministry to reconsider the decision and explore a feasible mechanism
for extending these language offerings to Classes XI and XII, in line with the
broader objective of preserving and promoting India’s rich linguistic
diversity.

Hang expressed gratitude to the Minister of State for giving him an opportunity
to discuss the matter and requested his kind intervention in support of the
students and communities seeking continuity of their languages in the formal
education system, the release mentions.
