The hidden kingdom of fungi is perhaps the least studied, yet not completely unfamiliar to the people of the state. Foraging for edible mushrooms and using fungi as medicine has been practiced here for millennia, but fungi have largely remained in the background of mainstream attention.
In recent times, the kingdom of fungi has experienced a modern-day renaissance, as mushrooms and fungi have become a hot topic worldwide. The numerous avenues that have opened in this regard offer real opportunities for science, livelihoods, culture, and conservation. The diversity of fungi and mushrooms that Sikkim is blessed with truly sets the stage for the state to create unique new pathways and opportunities.
Documenting fungi in Sikkim
One of the greatest assets of our state is its geography. In just a matter of hours, one can travel from beautifully carved river valleys to alpine grasslands and even cold deserts. These steep gradients, diverse fauna, and varied microclimates create habitats favorable to a wide variety of fungal life. The arrival of the monsoon is often marked by the appearance of certain species of fungi, as families head out into nearby forests to forage for their favorite mushrooms. It is not uncommon to find foraged mushrooms on sale in local markets, and while they are rare, discovering them is always a joyful event for any market-goer.
As an organic state, mushroom cultivation aligns perfectly with Sikkim’s low-impact agricultural practices. Programs run by the government, NGOs, and other organizations have introduced shiitake, oyster, and button mushroom cultivation to farmers, creating new avenues for income and food security. For a state with limited arable land, mushroom cultivation could truly lead the way forward.
Fungi and the future
Beyond food and income, fungi hold enormous scientific and industrial potential for Sikkim. Endophytic fungi from our forests could become new sources of bioactive compounds. Cold-adapted fungi, in particular, have applications in fields such as food processing, bioremediation, and even the manufacture of household chemicals.
The establishment of culture laboratories and infrastructure for DNA analysis would greatly strengthen the scientific applications of fungi in the state. Such facilities would not only create employment and research opportunities but it also has the potential to boost state revenue.
Since conservation is central to Sikkim’s identity, the absence of clearly outlined policies to identify and protect rare fungi presents an opportunity for growth. With collaboration between state agencies, NGOs, universities, and local communities, a myco-revolution in Sikkim is entirely possible.
A vision of the future
Imagine this: schoolchildren on a “mushroom walk,” learning names and sharing observations of fungi; cooperatives in rural areas packing attractive packets of dried, mountain-grown mushrooms; researchers from the state publishing discoveries of new species; and local entrepreneurs offering foraging-based experiences to visitors and tourists.
