RANGPO,: The trouble lifeline of Sikkim, NH10 again experienced a significant
disruption early this morning due to a landslide between Melli and Labarbhotey,
approximately 20 km from Rangpo.
The
landslide occurred at around 4 am, causing a long queue of vehicles on both
sides of the road. Two machines were deployed to clear the debris, and after
several hours of effort, the highway was restored for single-line traffic.
The
landslide caused considerable inconvenience to commuters, highlighting the
vulnerability of NH10 to natural disruptions, especially during the monsoon
season. This incident follows a series of similar occurrences in recent months,
emphasizing the need for more robust preventive measures.
In
response to the recurring landslides and the potential risks, the Kalimpong district
administration has issued a notification restricting vehicle movement on NH10.
According
to the new order, only private, government, and emergency service vehicles are
allowed to ply via NH10 from Teesta to Siliguri. Taxis and heavy vehicles are
instructed to take alternative routes due to the numerous vulnerable points
along NH10 that may sustain further damage.
The
decision to restrict certain vehicles aims to ensure the safety of travellers
and prevent additional disruptions. Authorities are urging all motorists to
comply with the new guidelines and cooperate during these challenging times.
Efforts to
clear and stabilize the affected sections of NH10 are ongoing, with teams
working diligently to restore full traffic flow as soon as possible. Meanwhile,
the administration continues to monitor the situation closely and is prepared
to take further action if necessary to safeguard public safety.
