Perfect is a coming-of-age story of a young man Gideon, the lessons he learns on the way, the complicated bond with his parents, and his beautiful relationship with Lakisha. This story not only entertains you but makes you reflect on your life and appreciate the little things that are so easy to take for granted. The transformation of Gideon from a rough, irresponsible boy to a mature man is shown with such dexterity that sometimes I couldn’t believe I was reading a debut author’s book.

The characters are sketched with precision and possess a lot of depth. They have their fair share of flaws, making them real, but they are still likable and easy to relate to. I fell in love with almost all of them, even the secondary characters. However, my favourite character is Lakisha. I don’t think I’ll be able to forget her very soon. A selfless, endearing character who left an indelible mark on my heart.

The prose is simple and lucid, peppered with a fair share of unique metaphors and similes, the necessary ingredients of a well-written book. The descriptions are also vivid, and I never found them lacking or excessive. The only flaw in this near-perfect book is the punctuation. There are missing punctuation marks and wrong usage in several places.

Personally, the most important aspect while reading a book is whether the author is capable of evoking emotions in me, and Ms. Eunice has excelled in the department. The humorous dialogues, lines, and situations—especially in the first half—made me laugh, and I can distinctly recall a couple of instances towards the end of the book where my eyes filled up with tears. Making people laugh and cry is the toughest thing to accomplish for any artist, and Ms. Eunice has done it successfully. Moreover, despite the fact that the book has its fair share of romance, I could not find any cheesy scene anywhere.

There are enough twists and turns to keep you interested throughout the book, and the ending also couldn’t have been done better. All loose ends are tied up, which results in a thoroughly satisfying experience.

I reiterate: this is one of the best books I’ve ever read. I strongly recommend this hidden gem to all my readers. Please try this and treat yourself to an amazing experience.
