SDF approaches National Commission for Women over online abuse

GANGTOK,: The Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) submitted a memorandum to the National Commission for Women (NCW) in New Delhi on Thursday.

The memorandum, submitted by Komal Chamling on behalf of the SDF party, highlighted recent cases of cybercrime and rape threats targeted at a woman spokesperson of the SDF, and another woman, and sought objective investigation from the Sikkim State Commission for Women.

The memorandum called upon the NCW to take immediate and decisive action against those responsible for these shameful and criminal acts, which reflect the growing culture of political intimidation in Sikkim and online abuse against women of the opposition who speak out fearlessly, said the SDF in a press statement.

The NCW has assured that it will investigate the matter thoroughly and take appropriate measures under law, said the SDF.

“The SDF party condemns in the strongest terms the harassment and threats faced by women leaders and reaffirm its commitment to ensuring their safety, respect, and participation in public life. The SDF stands resolute in defending the values of justice, equality, and women’s empowerment - principles that lie at the heart of a healthy democracy and the legacy of the SDF’s governance,” the SDF release states.
