GANGTOK, : Athletes from Sikkim
are all set to represent India in the 12th World Strength Lifting IBP
Championship, scheduled to be held in Pattaya, Thailand, from July 16 to 19.The
announcement was made by the Sikkim Strength Lifting Association (SSLA) in a
press conference here on Saturday.
A total of 20 athletes from
Sikkim, including 11 women, will represent India at the international event—a
milestone moment highlighting the State’s growing strength in the sport and the
rising prominence of women lifters.
Addressing the conference, SSLA
working president Allen Targain noted that among the selected athletes, 11 are
women, many of whom come from diverse backgrounds, including homemakers
balancing their sporting commitments alongside domestic responsibilities.
Despite these challenges, they
have demonstrated exceptional dedication, even self-financing their
participation—reflecting a deep sense of dedication and passion for the sport.
He emphasized that since its
inception, the association has consistently worked toward the promotion,
encouragement, and training of local athletes, creating opportunities for them
to compete at national and international levels, he added.
Targain, on behalf of the
association and the athletes, expressed gratitude to Chief Minister PS Golay
for his support and encouragement.He also appealed to the government to
consider granting paid leave to athletes representing Sikkim and
India—acknowledging the immense effort and commitment they invest.
Chief coach Pemba Dorjee Bhutia
echoed these sentiments, describing the strong female representation as a
majority of the lifters being women, with most hailing from Sikkim.He expressed
pride in the athletes’ selection through a highly competitive process and
acknowledged the support, facilities, and guidance provided by the State government. He added that the association takes pride
in honoring and uplifting all its athletes.

Rinzing Wangyal Chophel assured he would personally raise the request for paid
leave with the Chief Minister, stressing its importance in empowering
athletes. Highlighting that the “Iron Game” was initiated by India in 1986, he
remarked on how far the people of Sikkim have come in sports and commended the association’s
tireless efforts. He wished the athletes the very best as they prepare to
represent the State and the nation on the global stage.
