Sikkim riders shine at NE championship

GANGTOK, : Sikkim’s Samrat Samsher Basnett has secured second position at the first edition of the Fastest Man of Northeast championship, held at Warisa JR Kating, Guwahati from February 28 to March 1. Similarly, Burtuk resident Ashwin Rai secured 7th position.

The duo had taken part in the ‘up to 500 cc’ category. The championship was organized by 88 Racing team, led by Sashanka Sharma, the only international rider from the Northeast.

Samrat, a resident of Daragoan in Gangtok, is a professional motorsport athlete.

“It is an achievement for a State that has no tracks, infrastructure or facilities for riders to train. It is a testament that Sikkim possesses the quality of talent, and if the State government supports motorsports athletes, then we soon will have a national champion coming out of Sikkim,” said Samrat.

He further stated that with proper support and good facilities, the future of motorsports in Sikkim will bloom. He urged the State government to support by establishing a proper motorsports federation in Sikkim.

The championship had participation of 60 riders from the Northeast.
