Sikkim sends 24-member squad to national taekwondo Poomsae championship

GANGTOK, : More than 24 athletes from Sikkim will compete in the 5th India Taekwondo Poomsae & Para National Championship 2026-27, which will be held in Pune, Maharashtra from July 8 to 11.

The championship will take place at the Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex in Mahalunge and will feature competitors from across the country in cadet, junior and senior divisions.

Sikkim's athletes will participate in a range of events, including freestyle team Poomsae, junior team Poomsae, U-17 freestyle Poomsae (female), U-30 individual female, U-30 individual male, U-30 pair Poomsae, U-30 female team Poomsae, cadet individual male, cadet individual female, cadet pair Poomsae, cadet female team Poomsae, junior individual female and junior pair Poomsae.

The team will be led by coaches Ganga Pradhan, Saroj Gurung, Ugen Gurung and Sunil Limboo, who have overseen the athletes’ preparations for the national competition.

The event also serves as a pathway to international competition. Medal winners will be shortlisted for the final India national camp selection trials, with successful athletes earning the chance to represent India at the 2026 World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships in Chuncheon, South Korea.

In preparation for the championship, a 10-day intensive training camp was at Ganga Taekwondo Academy in Tadong, Gangtok. The camp, led by coaches Ganga Pradhan and Saroj Gurung, focused on enhancing the athletes' technical skills, physical fitness, synchronization, and overall performance to ensure they are well-prepared for national-level competition.

Officials from the Sikkim taekwondo community said they were confident the team would perform strongly and wished the athletes success at the national championship
