Sikkim teams gives commendable performance at first-ever participation in National Basketball Championship

GANGTOK, : The State women’s and men’s basketball teams have given a commendable performance during their maiden participation in the senior national basketball championship.

The State teams took part in the 75th Senior National Basketball Championship, held at Chennai from 4th to 11th January. This championship marked a historic milestone, as it was the first-ever participation of teams from Sikkim in the Senior National Basketball Tournament.

The senior women’s team delivered an outstanding performance, winning three matches during the championship, while the men’s team also won their maiden game and gained valuable experience at the national level, informs a press release from Basketball Association of Sikkim (BAS).

In their five games, the Sikkim women’s team secured victories over Bihar, Jharkhand, and Uttarakhand but were defeated by Rajasthan and Telangana.

The men’s team of Sikkim won against Andaman & Nicobar but lost to other four States in their group.

The Basketball Association of Sikkim wholeheartedly congratulates all the players, coaches, and support staff of Team Sikkim for their dedication, hard work, and commendable achievements at the national level, the release mentions.

The BAS extended its sincere gratitude to Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang-Golay, and BAS chief patron Tenzing Dorjee Bhutia for their unwavering support and encouragement.

This achievement is a major milestone for basketball in Sikkim and would not have been possible without the continuous guidance and support of the Chief Minister and our esteemed Chief Patron, said the BAS. Their commitment to the development of sports in the State has inspired and empowered our athletes to compete on the national stage, informed BAS general secretary Jigmela Wazilingpa.
