Sikkim to host boxing event of Khelo India University Games

GANGTOK, : State Sports & Youth Affairs department, in association with Sikkim University and with funding from Sports Authority of India (SAI), is all set to host the men’s boxing event of 4th Khelo India University Games at the indoor gymnasium hall of Plajor Stadium here from February 25 to 29.

Sikkim Amateur Boxing Association president Jaslal Pradhan, who has been appointed the competition manager, said, “It is an honour and a matter of pride for the State of Sikkim to host the men’s boxing competition under the 4th Khelo India University Games. Sikkim was extended the responsibility and the honour to host the competition following the successful conduct of the 6th Youth Nationals Boxing Championship in the past.”

The competition will see 104 boxers from eight Indian universities fight across 13 weight categories.

The entire competition would be organised by the staff of the Sports & Youth Affairs department, while SABA would provide technical support.

Sports additional director R.B. Biswakarma said that all the games under the University Games 2023 is being hosted in North East. “There are 20 games being held under the University Games including football, volley ball, athletics, rugby, basketball and boxing, and these games are being held in different State of the NE with Assam hosting the majority of the events including the inaugural ceremony.”

Altogether, more than 300 athletes are taking part in the University Games. As many as 200 universities had taken part in the selection round out of which the top eight qualified for the University Games.
