GANGTOK, : Sikkim’s fish production has
reached an impressive 953 metric tons this year, announced Fisheries minister
Puran Kumar Gurung today.
In
his National Fish Farmers Day message, the minister expressed his gratitude to
fish farmers, saying their efforts have helped make Sikkim a leading hill State
in sustainable fisheries. He also highlighted the proud moment when Sikkim was
declared India’s First Organic Fish Cluster, first announced in Guwahati on
January 6, 2024 and later mentioned by the Prime Minister during Sikkim’s
Golden Jubilee celebrations.
Gurung
said that schemes like Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) and
Mukhya Mantri Matsya Utpadan Yojana (MMMUY) are giving farmers crucial financial
and technical support. “We have successfully implemented cutting-edge
technologies, including modern trout raceways, efficient live vending centers,
and well-organized domestic fish markets, which are enhancing both production
and market access for our farmers,” he minister said.
To
ensure transparency and accessibility, Gurung said the department has fully
embraced digital systems for scheme applications, No Objection Certificates
(NOCs) and licensing. These online systems make it easier for farmers to get
support quickly and without delays.
The
minister added that value-added fish products are being promoted to help
farmers earn more and reach new markets. He also stressed the importance of
eco-friendly fish farming to protect Sikkim’s environment and biodiversity.
“Our commitment extends to promoting eco-friendly aquaculture practices that
ensure the long-term health of our aquatic ecosystems and preserve Sikkim's
rich biodiversity. We believe in growth that harmonizes with nature.”
To
help farmers learn new skills, the minister said, the department is running
training and development programs so they can stay updated and ready for future
challenges.
