GANGTOK, : The Himalayan Zoological Park (HZP) at Bulbuley here is dedicated to
ex-situ conservation of endangered species of wildlife. In June 2024, the Zoo
Animal Adoption Program – ‘My Child from Wild’ was launched in the presence of
Chief Minister PS Golay.
A
press release informs that this program has seen six adopters so far, with the
youngest adopter – Pennor D. Bomzon, aged 8, who used her birthday money and
pocket money to sponsor the HZP’s leopard cat for 6 months.
Among
the individuals who helped get the ball rolling is actress Shyamashree
Sherpawho was the first adopter of Pokchi, the HZP’s oldest red panda.
“We
are also very touched by the generous and kind gesture of Chundyu N. Gensapa
and members of Ride Sikkim who adopted
‘Çhimi’ our beloved Clouded Leopard and ‘Kemo Reep and Songru Pundi”, two of
our Red Pandas over the last two days.
Small genuine gestures like these are what keep us motivated to do
better and provide better facilities for our animals,” said the HZP.
‘My
Child from Wild’ is not just for corporates and industries but also for
individuals of all ages. Even schools, sporting clubs, nature clubs and NGOs
are also encouraged to participate in this one of a kind program.
The
HZP said that ‘My Child from Wild’ encourages public participation and
encouraging bonding between animals and humans.it encourages meaningful
partnership by adopting an animal and contributing to its care through
sponsorships. Participants in this program enjoy exclusive benefits including
complimentary park entry and access to zoo programs, the HZP said.
