State BJP petitions PM for special Central assistance for North Sikkim

GANGTOK, : In light of the continuing devastation caused by the 2023 Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) and the subsequent landslides during the 2024 and 2025 monsoons, the Sikkim BJP has submitted a heartfelt petition to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking an urgent Central intervention and special assistance for Mangan district and other severely affected areas of the State.

Earlier this week, BJP team had visited the Mangan district (North Sikkim) to assess the ground realities of devastation caused by the recent calamities.

The memorandum, signed by BJP Sikkim president DR Thapa, outlines the grave humanitarian, economic, and strategic crisis in North Sikkim. It notes the loss of lives, destruction of critical infrastructure like bridges, roads, and hydropower projects, and the total collapse of tourism and livelihood in the region, a State BJP release informs on Monday.

The party has urged the Prime Minister to declare the 2023 GLOF and its aftermath a National Disaster, and has sought a Special Reconstruction and Resilience Package, deployment of a Joint Central-State Task Force, and creation of a North Sikkim Disaster Rehabilitation Authority under the Ministry of DoNER or NDMA.

Additional key demands include permanent rehabilitation of displaced families, slope stabilization, desilting and embankment work along the Teesta River, loan restructuring for local businesses, and fast-tracking of the Sevoke–Rangpo Railway Line and alternative road corridors to ensure long-term connectivity.

BJP Sikkim has expressed full faith in the Prime Minister’s leadership and vision of Viksit Bharat, and hopes that timely Central support will bring much-needed relief, rehabilitation, and long-term resilience to the people of North Sikkim, states the release issued by Sikkim BJP media in-charge Niren Bhandari.
