The announcement was made during a press conference held on Saturday at the Journalists’ Union of Sikkim (JUS), Gangtok.

Addressing the media, Pewa Hang Subba, general secretary of SYBC Rumbuk, shared details about the upcoming State-level championship and the ongoing preparations. He stated that the event aims to provide a competitive platform for young boxers and promote the sport at the grassroots level in Sikkim.

Mizoram Subba, vice president of SYBC Rumbuk, said that the championship would be the first-ever State-level boxing event to be held in Daramdin constituency, marking a historic moment as no such programme has been organised in the area earlier.

At the press meet, the SYBC expressed heartfelt gratitude to Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang (Golay), stating that organising a programme of this scale in a remote area like Rumbuk has been possible due to the Chief Minister’s visionary leadership and emphasis on sports and youth development.

The SYBC also expressed sincere gratitude to area MLA of Daramdin constituency, MN Sherpa, for his valuable contribution towards sports and for extending support to the championship. The club also thanked various individuals and associations for their constant support in making the event possible.

Highlighting the objective of the championship, the organisers said that the initiative aims to divert children and youth away from harmful influences such as intoxicating substances, excessive mobile phone usage, and depression, and encourage them to take up sports for a healthier and more disciplined life.

The organisers also extended their sincere thanks to SABA president and Arjuna Awardee Jas Lal Pradhan and his entire team for granting permission to organise the State-level championship at Rumbuk.

Youjal Subba, CEO of SYBC and a national-level boxer, highlighted the achievements of the club. He informed that SYBC was founded in 1993 at Namchi by Jiwan Kumar Rai and was officially registered in 2010, making it the oldest and historically registered boxing club in Sikkim. The club began its activities in Rumbuk in 2008.

From 2008 to 2026, around 60 boxers have participated at the State level, while 22 boxers have represented the State at the national level, winning gold, silver, and bronze medals. Several players trained under SYBC have secured employment in the Sikkim Police, IRB, Indian Army, and Survey of India.
