Sunandita Bista and Uttam Jindal are the State badminton champions

GANGTOK,: Sunandita Bista and Uttam Jindal on Wednesday respectively won the women’s and men’s singles event of 3rd Senior State Ranking Badminton Championship 2023 held at Marena Arena, SMIT complex at Majhitar near Rangpo.

The duo from Badminton Association of Jorethang also won the mixed doubles’ event defeating the finalists from Badminton Association of Namchi. They were adjudged as the best players of the tournament, informs a press release.

The championship was held from March 6 to 8 by Badminton Club of Majhitar under the aegis of Badminton Association of Sikkim (BAS).

The five events viz. men’s singles, women's singles, men’s doubles, women's doubles and mixed doubles were fought with a nail biting finish. The tournament has also seen winners at veteran's 35+ , 40+ and 50+ events.

Tsheten Dorjee Bhutia of Singtam Badminton Club and Semina Rai of Badminton Association of Jorethang were awarded with ‘Most Improved Players’ trophies respectively.

Upper Tadong MLA GT Dhungel was the chief guest on the occasion also attended by Chief Minister’s political secretary Jacob Khaling, SMIT director Prof GL Sharma, Gangtok deputy mayor Tshering Palden, Rural Development chairperson Sunita Gautam, BAS president C. Zangpo, and Sikkim Olympic Committee president Kuber Bhandari.

Fifteen social workers of the region along with Majhitar Sporting Club was felicitated for their contributions to the society, the release informs.
