GANGTOK,: In the wake of the breach in the road formation at Taram Chu, which
has led to the closure of the Chungthang-Lachen road axis, a joint site inspection
was conducted to assess the extent of damage and explore the feasibility of
restoring traffic movement on Monday.
The
inspection was carried out by Anant Jain, District Collector, Mangan; L. B.
Chettri, Superintendent of Police; Arun Chettri, SDM Chungthang; Chandan
Chhetri, SDPO Chungthang; along with the SHO, Chungthang and AE,BAC, an
official press release informs.
During
the visit, the team conducted a detailed assessment of the damaged stretch and
held discussions with officials from the Border Roads Organisation (BRO),
including the Commander and Officer Commanding of 86 RCC, who are responsible
for the maintenance and restoration of the affected road.
The
inspection aimed to evaluate the severity of the breach, identify immediate
risks, and explore possible measures for early restoration of connectivity
along this vital route. Necessary directions were issued to the concerned
executing agencies to take prompt and appropriate action for reopening the road
at the earliest, subject to safety considerations, informed the Chungthang SDM.
Meanwhile,
a coordinated effort was carried out today to clear the thick layer of snow
along Lachen- Donkyla- Shiv Mandir axis.
However,
the work could not be completed due to adverse weather conditions. Despite best
efforts by the Indian Army and BRO in coordination with District Disaster
Management Authority and local stakeholders, the route could not be cleared for
safe passage of tourists lodged in Lachen. The effort will restart early
morning tomorrow, it was reported.
Meanwhile,
Mangan DC Anant Jain and SP LB Chettri are closely monitoring the situation and
adequate manpower from the DDMA have been pressed in for the road clearance and
evacuation process.
The
DC and SP are slated to visit the site early morning tomorrow, it was informed.
