Young Army officer dies rescuing fellow soldier in North Sikkim

GANGTOK, : A 23-year-old Indian Army officer lost his life while attempting to rescue a fellow soldier during an operational task in North Sikkim on Thursday.

Lieutenant Shashank Tiwari, serving with the Sikkim Scouts of Indian Army and commissioned less than six months ago, was leading a route-opening patrol towards a Tactical Operating Base (TOB), a key post being prepared for future deployment. Around 11 am, Agniveer Stephan Subba, a member of the patrol, slipped while crossing a log bridge and was swept away by a fast-moving mountain stream, the Army said in a statement.

“Displaying remarkable presence of mind, selfless leadership, and unwavering commitment to his men, Lt. Tiwari instinctively jumped into the treacherous waters to rescue the Agniveer, without a moment’s hesitation,” the statement read. “Naik Pukar Katel also jumped in immediately to assist. Together, they managed to save the drowning Agniveer. Tragically, Lt. Tiwari was swept away by the powerful current. Despite desperate efforts by his team, his body was recovered approximately 800 metres downstream by 11:30 am.”

The Army paid tribute to Lt. Tiwari’s ultimate sacrifice, calling his actions “a shining example of the Indian Army’s core values.”

“At just 23 years of age, Lieutenant Tiwari embodied the highest traditions of the Indian Army — placing the life of a comrade above his own, leading from the front, and upholding the noblest ideals of military ethics and valour,” the statement added.

Lt. Tiwari is survived by his parents and a sister.

The Indian Army has expressed deep sorrow over the loss, emphasizing that despite his brief service, Lt. Tiwari leaves behind a lasting legacy of bravery and camaraderie that will continue to inspire generations of soldiers.
