GANGTOK,: Veteran socio-political activist Tseten Tashi Bhutia has been announced as the recipient of the first ‘Kongchen Dorjee Award’ by the Sikkim Indigenous Lepcha Tribal Association (SILTA).
The award will be presented to Tseten Tashi on November 16 during the function scheduled at Hotel Rendezvous here, informed SILTA president Mayalmit Lepcha and general secretary Tashi Lhamu Lepcha at a press meet on Thursday.
It was shared that ‘Kongchen Dorjee Award’ was constituted by the SILTA to honour those individuals of Sikkim who have passionately served Sikkim and its society for several years. The award is not an annual honour, and would be presented to only those deserving persons who have spent years of their lives to give inedible contributions to Sikkim, said the association.
“Tseten Tashi Bhutia has been vocal for protection of local rights and old laws of Sikkim for around three decades. He has always been a bold and uncompromising voice for Sikkim and Sikkimese and we want to honour him with this award,” said the SILTA president.
Lavi Sangay, a highly respected faith healer (Bongthing), is the chief guest for the award function.
We have sent invitations to many organisations and political parties for the award function and through this media conference, we appeal to the people of Sikkim to attend the event, said the SILTA.
