Sports department organises mountain biking race

GANGTOK: As many as 40 bikers participated in Sikkim Mountain Biking Competition organised by State sports department today. The event was organised to mark the year-long celebration of the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
The bikers were flagged off from Titanic Park at MG Marg here by Gangtok MLA Pintso Chopel Lepcha.
The 65-km race concluded at Rumtek after covering areas like Tashi View Point, Pangthang, Samdong, upper Tumin, Khamdong and Sang.
Asim Sharma from West Sikkim finished first (2 hours, 40 minutes), followed by Urgen Lama from Darjeeling and Ching Hang Rai from Gangtok in second and third position respectively.
The trio were awarded with cash prizes along with certificates and medals.
Adrian Khawash from Kalimpong and Dawa Sherpa from Darjeeling finished fourth and fifth respectively.
A token of Rs. 1,000 each were also given to five students of different schools who completed the race.
MLA Pintso Chopel Bhutia congratulated the department for holding the event. He said that by holding such events the department can attract more youth towards this sports of mountain biking.
Sports secretary Dhakal informed that the department plans organise other sports event as well to commemorate the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
