Rural Sikkim ignored by SDF govt for 25 years: Golay

GANGTOK: Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) president P.S. Golay on Tuesday maintained that the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) government has failed to develop rural Sikkim during its 25 years in governance.
“The claims made by SDF government to have developed entire Sikkim are false. The SDF government only shows few areas as developmental models while the condition of villages remain as they were before. By laying tiles in M.G. Marg, Gangtok, Namchi, Jorethang and other bazaars does not mean real development. Real development should take place in the villages but today there is huge dearth of basic minimum needs in the villages,” said Golay.
Golay was speaking in SKM social media pages on the sixth and final day of his Daramdin constituency as part of his ‘Parivartan Sankalpa Yatra’. He had started his yatra from Dodak and completed his tour of Daramdin constituency today.
“We were supposed to complete our yatra in five days but could not cover the entire constituency within five days. Our team visited all villages and remote areas of Daramdin constituency where we interacted with the villagers. What we realised during the interactions is that the SDF government has failed to fully develop Sikkim and could not make people of Sikkim self-reliant even being in power for 25 years,” said Golay.
The SKM president said there are many villages in the constituency who are suffering hardships due to lack of proper drinking water supply. They are dependent on agriculture for livelihood but they not have water supply, he said adding the problems are compounded by lack of proper road connectively.
“I went to Tareybhir where the villagers are hardworking farmers and cultivate vegetables like cabbage, carrot and radish. They, however, do not have proper road connectivity and as a result, do not get proper rates for their vegetables. Their vegetables are rotting in the fields. Such is the situation in the villages,” said Golay. He said the healthcare system in Daramdin condition is poor causing hardships for the people.
SDF government only shows the M.G. Marg to Union ministers and officials and claim that there is huge development in Sikkim, said Golay.
“During the tour, we never told the villagers to vote for us. The villagers are waiting for a Parivartan like rest of Sikkim,” said the SKM president.
Golay would be starting his tour of Zoom-Salghari constituency from Wednesday for a period of five days.
