GANGTOK,: Members of the Hamro Sikkim Party (HSP) are scheduled to hold a dharna at Jantar Mantar, Delhi on January 7 to raise several pressing issues of the State at the national level.
The Delhi-bound HSP team of youth wing members led by vice president Bhaichung Bhutia were given a grand send off by vice president Ran Bahadur Subba and other functionaries from the HSP head office Deorali here on Saturday.
Bhaichung informed that the dharna is being held in the national capital to attract the attention of the Centre government with respect to alleged massive corruption in the State under the SDF regime. Besides, the party would raise the demand of Assembly seat reservation for Scheduled Tribe Limboo-Tamang communities, granting Scheduled Tribe status to the 11 left-out communities and restoration of the lost Nepali seats in the Sikkim Legislative Assembly, he told media.
“We chose to stage the dharna on corruption as we feel Sikkim is being slowly poisoned with corruption and that poison today is spreading like a cancer in our society destroying our State completely. The financial status of our State is at stake and the State government is under financial crisis,” said Bhaichung.
The former Indian football captain alleged that Chief Minister Pawan Chamling and his family members have more funds than the State government. “Even under such financial crisis like situation, the SDF government is floating numerous schemes with a single agenda that is to retain its seat and continue ruling. The scheme of facilitating one job to one member of the family is a selfish scheme of the government to seek votes and retain power. But we care for the State and the future generation and if amicable solution and steps are not considered now then our State will be doomed in years to come,” he added.
According to Bhaichung, the January 7 dharna has been planned in the national capital to have the Centre government focus on Sikkim and take necessary action like CBI entry and enquiry. “The dharna is just the beginning. If solution to corruption is not met, we plan to go aggressively in future both in State and in the Center for justice that is eradication of corruption. If needed, we also plan to stage hunger strike too. During our visit to Delhi, we also have plan to visit the Prime Minister and Home minister and submit written memorandums on all the issues pertaining to our State demanding immediate intervention and solution,” Bhaichung mentioned.
Vice president Ran Bahadur Subba said prior to the Delhi dharna the HSP party had met the Governor. The party submitted memorandum highlighting the corrupt practices prevailing in the State and issues related to political and social rights of the Sikkimese wherein no solution so far has been met.
“Our party has been advocating on these issues since inception but now we also plan to attract the attention of the Central government seeking solution to these problems. Apart from this, our youth wing will also highlight the demand of availing tribal status to the 11 left out communities. Similarly visit of Karmapa to Sikkim has not been advocated well and during the dharna our team also plans to raise this issue,” said Subba.
