Anju Tamang scored the lone goal of the game in the 48th minute as India defeated Iran to begin their campaign at the Hero Gold Cup on a winning note at the Kalinga Stadium in Odisha on Saturday.
The goal from Mangalbaria Girls Football Academy product ensured the Indian women’s football team made it five wins in a row, having won the last four friendlies against Hong Kong and Indonesia respectively.
The 24-year-old missed a goal scoring opportunity in 15th minute, but she made sure that her second attempt found the target and give India a good start.
The Indian team started the better of the two, with the forwards creating plenty of chances. However, despite that, Iran held on firmly, even launching counter-attacks of their own at times. Nevertheless, the two sides went into the break level on score.
The second half began on a similar note as the first, with India quickly establishing their dominance. However, this time, all the pressure finally paid off as Anju latched on to a through ball from winger Sanju Yadav to tap into an empty net.
Sanju was played in behind the defence and with an excellent first touch she drew out the rival goalkeeper. With her second touch, she then squared the ball to Anju, who slotted it home to give India a deserving lead.
From there on, both sides fought hard; Iran looking for the equalizer while India for insurance. Nonetheless, the score remained the same, with India narrowly beating their opponents to go joint top.
Anju, who hails from North Bengal, had trained at Mangalbaria Girls Football Academy under founding coach Palden Bhutia.
