Slamming the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) for stitching a pre-poll alliance with the BJP, the Sikkim Republican Party (SRP) today alleged the SKM of underestimating the people of Sikkim.
Claiming such an alliance will invite danger to the State, SRP president K.B. Rai said, “Sikkim has never been in need of national party and it still stands in today's time but some party are going for an alliance and inviting danger to our State. If a national party wants to play on Sikkim's turf, its first priority must be on providing equal status to the people of Sikkim that stands as the major reason for Sikkim being part of the Indian union,” said Rai.He was addressing his party’s public meeting at Singtam bazaar on Wednesday.
Rai maintained that SKM has already reached an alliance with the BJP and the 8-point common minimum programme is merely to mislead people
The SRP president also criticised other political outfits including the SDF for failing to provide political security to the State. He added that until issues like Assembly seat reservation is solved, such alliances will be a problem.
“The SDF was part of NEDA and it did try for an alliance, but with BJP keeping a condition for SDF being clubbed into BJP, it didn’t go for it. Even the Bhaichung Bhutia-led Hamro Sikkim Party tried its best for alliance. All such parties and organizations are hungry for power and not concerned for the people of Sikkim and its future,” stated Rai.
Bouncing back on the BJP, Rai said the saffron party played a game with the people of Darjeeling as well by electing S.S. Ahluwalia to the Lok Sabha. But the same Ahluwalia has retorted to possible influx from Nepal if the Nepali seat reservation is granted.
“Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself came to the district and claimed ‘Gorkha ka Sapna, Mera Sapna’. But, BJP is backtracking from the same now, so SKM party and all other parties vying for a possible alliance with national party must understand the game of national parties,” he said.
The SRP, Rai informed is yet to decide on contesting from all 32 Assembly seats while it would enter the poll fray for Lok Sabha on the lines of making the State Legislative Assembly equal for all communities in the State based on their population.
“The SRP's fight will always be on amending the Sikkim Legislative Assembly so that it is equally reserved for all communities of the State. No one should be neglected or favoured in the State Assembly. The seat sharing in the Assembly must be based on population. Article 371F(f) has a provision the different communities of the State does not need to be based on reservation, it can be granted without guaranteeing Schedule Tribe or Schedule Caste to any specific community. The party's top priority will be securing reservation for all communities based on their population,” he maintained.
