National handloom expo inaugurated in Gangtok

GANGTOK,: The national handloom expo organised by Sikkim Handloom & Handicrafts Development Corporation Ltd, Gangtok was inaugurated by Commerce & Industries principal secretary Thomas Chandy at the Directorate of Handicrafts & Handloom premises here today. The expo started on March 12 and will continue till March 26.
The expo comes under the National Handloom Development Programme (NHDP) and is sponsored by the Office of the Development Commissioner (Handloom), Ministry of Textiles.
The formal inauguration was also attended by DHH director Jyotsna Mary Karthak, officers and staff from DHH, tourists and locals.
The chief guest visited the stalls and interacted with the participants. He showed keen interest and happiness in the various activities.
The expo has 40 stalls allocated to various weavers and SHGs from the States of Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Assam, Bihar, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir and Sikkim.
The expo is being conducted with an aim to provide a platform for weavers, sellers and buyers to converge and create awareness vis-à-vis the handloom sector as an employment and income generating industry. Further, the government’s vision and policy of creating sustainable cottage industry, in every home and village is also being proactively disseminated.
The National Handloom Expo is a pan-India programme.
