Will upgrade Pakyong into a district: Chamling

RUPESH SHARMA
GANGTOK:
SDF president and Chief Minister Pawan Chamling today cautioned people against following a party whose leader’s future is uncertain which may jeopardise the future of Sikkim and its people.
Without naming SKM president P.S. Golay, Chamling in his election campaign at Rorathang, east district said earlier the SKM leader banked on some lawyers to claim he can contest election. “Now since he was barred and didn’t contest but has been named the Chief Ministerial candidate. How a person who can’t even contest election become a Chief Minister?,” questioned Chamling.
A party without a leader and Chief Ministerial candidate will dupe the people, said the SDF president.
He accused SKM acting president Kunga Nima Lepcha of spreading canards on the SDF government’s alleged stance against granting income tax exemption to the business community. “Kunga Nima has always lied. I dare him to show if we have written any such letter,” said Chamling terming the SKM as a party being ‘sold out’ to the BJP. “It is SKM from outside and BJP inside. They have already sold their party. Even the BJP candidates are appealing people to vote for SKM and not to the BJP,” he added.
Today’s public meeting at Rorathang as part of the SDF party’s Vijay Sankalpa Yatra was for three constituencies- Gnathang-Machong, Rhenock and Chujachen in east district.
Hitting back on Golay for his ‘businessman’ jibe on the Chief Minister, Chamling said he is a seasoned leader who has been a Chief Minister for five consecutive terms.
Golay had yesterday accused Chamling of being a businessman.
Sharing his next government’s commitment to pursue the Limboo-Tamang Assembly seat reservation issue and ST status for 11 left-out communities, the SDF president said his mission is to win all 32 Assembly seats this elections for which he has been working day and night.
Commenting on the labour contractor issue, Chamling shared that the system would be abolished in consultation with the people.
Expressing serious concerns on intra-party strife and factionalism, Chamling stated that such acts are posing threats to the party rather than the challenge from the opposition. He also exhorted party leaders to hold talks with party functionaries annoyed after being denied tickets.
Chamling shared several innovative initiatives to be implemented in the next SDF government. He said Pakyong would be upgraded into a district in the first cabinet meeting after forming the next government and the district offices would start functioning within 100 days.
The meeting was attended by SDF candidate D.T. Lepcha (Gnathang-Machong), Hemendra Adhikari (Rhenock) and K.B. Rai (Chujachen) and sitting ministers and MLAs Somnath Poudyal, D.D. Bhutia and Bikram Pradhan among others.
