Congress slams GNLF, Bimal camp for ‘betraying’ Darjeeling people

DARJEELING,: The Congress party today alleged that Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF) leader Mann Ghisingh and Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) leader Bimal Gurung were betraying the people and only working for their own benefits.
After addressing the election campaign for Congress candidate for Darjeeling Lok Sabha seat Shankar Malakar at Chowk Bazaar here, Congress in-charge for Bengal V.P. Singh claimed that the hill parties had approached the Central party for forging an alliance ahead of the polls.
“About four months back Bimal Gurung had contacted me with their leader Roshan Giri meeting me. They told me that the BJP had done nothing for them and that it was the Congress that had worked for the people in the hills like the formation of the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council, Gorkhaland Territorial Administration and also recognition of Nepali language. They wanted to form an alliance with us and we also let them meet our senior leaders,” said Singh adding that the party also wanted a permanent solution for Darjeeling be included in its manifesto.
¨Later GNLF leader Mann Ghisingh also came and contacted us and said they wanted an alliance with us. We also agreed to the demand of having a local candidate but few days later they along with Gurung’s camp held a joint press conference and announced their support to the BJP. I just want to ask them as to how long will they lie to the people and do them injustice. In the past ten years, neither the TMC nor the BJP has done anything for the hills or its peace and development,” said the AICC leader who also questioned how the GNLF could have an alliance with Gurung’s camp.
Singh maintained that the two hill parties also betrayed the people in the hills by talking about a local candidate at first then bringing a candidate from Manipur.
“In the BJP manifesto, a permanent political solution for the Hills, Terrai and Dooars has been mentioned but where is the issue of Gorkhaland mentioned. In the 103-day-agitation, the Prime Minister could have interfered but they did nothing even when people died. Leaders like Bimal Gurung, Mann Ghisingh and Roshan Giri in the name of the hills are only filling their pockets,” he alleged.
Singh also maintained that they would complain to the Election Commission against the BJP and their alliance alleging that their supporters delayed their vehicles at Kurseong not allowing their candidate to attend their public meeting at Darjeeling in time. The BJP candidate had a campaign programme at Kurseong Monteviot road today following which people had turned up in huge numbers to extend their support to the candidate.
