The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) is all set to start more services along with added attractions like the rail bus before the pujas this year to woo more tourists.
NF Railway general manager Sanjiv Roy and Katihar DRM Sumit Sarkar, who visited the Darjeeling railway station Friday as part of an inspection visit, said the new services would be added as more tourists were keen to take the toy train ride.
“There is a good response from tourists on the DHR as numbers of passengers have increased in 2018-19 compared to the previous year. We have earned Rs.12 crore last year while in the previous year it was only about Rs.5 crore. This year we are trying to run more services which will also increase our revenue," said Sarkar.
The NFR’s future plans include introduction of self-propelling rail buses along with four more vista dome coaches and AC coaches.
“We will also increase service of diesel engines, one in May and the other in June and there are also plans of introducing more services by steam engine also before the pujas,” added Roy.
The officials also maintained that they also want to increase the publicity of the DHR for which they will try and make people aware of the DHR services and routes at NJP.
Speaking about the encroachment issue near railway lines, the officials said the DHR workers have been asked to check and not allow construction of structures close to the tracks to ensure that the train service is not hampered.
