The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) factions of Bimal Gurung and Binay Tamang on Monday paid homage to people who lost their lives during the Gorkhaland agitation of 2017. The Binay camp held a tribute programme at Chowk Bazaar while the Bimal camp took social media to remember the martyrs.
Absconding GJM founder Bimal Gurung was blamed for the loss of lives during the 2017 agitation by the Binay-camp Morcha leaders.
“We were against the type of agitation held in 2017 and not against the demand of Gorkhaland. That time the agitation had no direction or any plan with three of them dying on this date in 2017 at Singamari. They were from areas like Bijanbari and Goak and that day a programme called Patlebas Chalo was going on. If they were coming from their area, Patlebas comes first then Singamari so how they had come to Singamari that day?”, said Satish Pokhrel, a leader from the Binay-led GJM.
The Binay-Morcha camp stressed on the demand that a bill is placed on Gorkhaland demand in the Parliament by the BJP.
“The BJP has been taking votes since 2009 for the demand of Gorkhaland for three times now but they have not spoken on the demand of Gorkhaland now. This time too they have won from here with huge number of votes. They should not play with the emotions of the people. We demand that the issue of Gorkhaland starts from the first session of the Parliament and dreams of the saheeds are fulfilled,” said Anit Khati, a leader of the Morcha (Binay camp).
Fugitive Morcha leader (Bimal camp) Roshan Giri issued a press statement through a social media video.
“It has been two years that people sacrificed their lives and we remember all this day who have laid down their lives for Gorkhaland from 1986. We respect the sacrifice they made and it is our promise that we will continue to work for the demand of Gorkhaland and their sacrifice will not go in vain,” he said.
A press release was also issued by Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF) president Mann Ghisingh paying homage to the martyrs.
“We would like to pay our homage to all the saheeds who have sacrificed their lives from 1986 to 2017 for the land and community. We will work together till their dreams are fulfilled and not let their sacrifice go in vain,” said the GNLF leader.
