GANGTOK,: At least 60 vehicles carrying local passengers and tourists were stranded for several hours after landslides snapped connectivity between Damthang and Namchi in South Sikkim on Monday.
The landslide triggered by incessant rain since Sunday blocked the Jaubari, Dharey to Damthang road stretch. The vehicles halted at secured sites along the highway due to the continuous rainfall and possibility of fresh slides, an IPR release from Namchi informs.
By Monday afternoon, police patrol team escorted some of the stranded vehicles to Namchi before further slides rendered evacuation of the rest of the commuters impossible. The road from Upper Jaubari, Dharey to Damthang was later cleared making it convenient for commuters to reach their respective destinations. As a humanitarian gesture snacks were given to the stranded people by the officials.
The south district disaster management team along with police personnels, engineers, contractors and various others stakeholders mobilized manpower and machinery to clear the debris and restore normal vehicular movement.
