DARJEELING,: In a surprise political development, the Gorkha National Liberation Front’s (GNLF) trade union president J.B. Tamang, along with several other GNLF supporters today joined the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (Binoy Tamang
The GNLF leader joined the Morcha alleging that the BJP was not serious about the demands of the Gorkhas and only used the Gorkha community for electoral gains. Tamang is the president of Himalayan Plantation Workers Union (HPWU) and had played a pivotal role in the recently concluded Lok Sabha and Assembly by-election.
Accepting the party flag from GJM general secretary Anit Thapa at Rangbull community hall today, Tamang said, “Various promises were made on behalf of the BJP by the two candidates for the aspiration of a separate State before the election.
They also assured to actively work for the tea garden workers. Recently, I had a talk with the Darjeeling MP Raju Bista and he made it clear that as per the BJP high command garnering membership was more important at the moment.”
The former GNLF leader said the BJP had betrayed the hill people for the last 10 years when they had MPs here and would continue to do so this time too.
"Before the elections, I assured the tea garden workers that the BJP would work for them and for Gorkhaland but now it seems that the people here were only used for the elections. We did not support the BJP for membership. Even our party leadership failed to provide answers when I raised it with them,” he alleged.
“The Darjeeling MP visits the neighbouring State of Sikkim to be with the but has not visited this place when the people here are facing problems due to the severe monsoons that has already claimed two lives and destroyed homes,” he said.
The Darjeeling MP and also the MLA have raised the issue of the landslides with the Central government to provide relief to the affected of the victims of the natural calamities in the Hills.
Asked on his reasons for joining the GJM, Tamang said said, “The GJM under Anit Thapa and Binoy Tamang share a cordial relation with the State government which has made progress to implement several issues related to the Hills. The State government has undertaken several development works for the Hills and we feel they understand our problems better.”
Welcome Tamang into the party, Anit Thapa said, “We expect him to make our trade union stronger and work for the garden workers. He has vast knowledge about the tea gardens and its problems. He will be the working president of our trade union.”
On the other hand, senior GNLF leader, Ajay Edwards, said, "People will not forgive J.B. Tamang’s betrayal as he has joined hands with people who he termed as betrayers in the past.  For our party, no individual is above the party. We will continue to work for the tea garden workers and also form a new committee of our trade union.”
