A lorry loaded with fruits caught fire after colliding head on with another truck near Moonee Tea Estate under Bagdogra police station on Saturday morning.
Two trucks loaded with fruits were coming towards Siliguri when another truck coming from the opposite direction collided and one of the trucks.
The fruits that were being brought to Siliguri Regulated Market from New Delhi were burnt into ashes while local residents swarmed to collect the fruits including apples into the sack.
“Local tea garden workers and passer-by were seen collecting apples in bags, pots, pockets and whatsoever they received just after the accident took place,” said Sunil Sharma a passenger of Kishanganj-bound taxi.
After the incident Bagdogra police and Fire personnel from Matigara rushed to the spot and controlled the situation.
AmitModi, driver of the truck said that fruits worth Rs. 8 lakhs were burnt and rest fell on road.
