: The Sikkim Cricket Association (SICA) has named its 15-member squad for the 2019 edition of the Vijay Hazare Trophy, selecting three new local faces to provide the energy of youth to an otherwise experienced team, particular with the presence of the three professional players from outside.
The three new local players are TashiPintsoBhalla, ChitizTamang and Nitesh Kumar Gupta. The team includes veterans NileshLamichaney, who became the first Sikkim player to score a List-A century last year, and Lee Yong Lepcha, who had a great outing as an all-rounder. All-rounder BhusanSubba, 25, is the youngest member in the squad.
Even among the three outstation players, there are two new additions in left arm orthodox spinner SayyedIqbal Abdullah, a vastly experienced player who had won the ICC Under-19 World Cup in 2008 and the IPL with Kolkata Knight Riders in 2012 and Yashpal Singh, a seasoned campaigner from Delhi. Medium pacer IshwarChaudhary, the third professional player, was in the squad the previous season as well.
The 12 local players were selected from the list of 21 probables who had attended the 15-day specialized camp at KIIT, Bhubaneswar recently under the supervision of National Cricket Academy batting consultant Dinesh Nanavaty and bowling consultant AtulGaikwad. The players were assessed on their technical abilities and fitness level.
However, there is still no clarity as to who will captain the side this season. The skipper is expected to be named after the 12-day preparatory camp scheduled to be held in Bhubaneswar before the start of the tournament.
Sikkim had a poor Vijay Hazare campaign last year, losing all their eight group matches. With two new professional signings and “well prepared” local players, Sikkim hopes to do better this year.
“We have got a balanced team and we expect a good performance from the players. We are well prepared, positive and expect a good show. If our local boys perform well, I will be more than happy,” said SonamPaldenBhutia, who has been assigned the task of coaching the senior men’s team this year. Bhutia is the first cricket coach from the entire Northeast to coach a senior State team in the domestic competition.
The Vijay Hazare Trophy will be held at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Dehradun from end September to October 2019 with Sikkim playing their first match on September 26. Sikkim has been placed in the Plate Group alongside Arunachal Pradesh Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Puducherry and Uttarakhand.
