Winning start for EMRS Gangyap in CBSE NE basketball tourney

: Defending champions and nine-time consecutive winners EMRS Gangyap girls are taking part in the CBSE cluster 1 (Northeast region) basketball championship 2019-20 being held at Miles Bronson Residential School, Guwahati.
Eklayva Residential Model School (EMRS) Gangyap is located in remote West Sikkim and has won the northeastern-level of this tournament for nine straight times since first participation in 2010.
On Friday, EMRS Gangyap girls played their first match with a 51-0 thrashing Faculty High School, Guwahati. The team has new members led by Hissey Gyalmoo Tamang and Pema Wangmoo Bhutia, both studying in class IX.
Hissey scored 21 points while Pema claimed 17 points.
The girls’ team will be playing their second game today evening.
The boys’ team of EMRS Gangyap is led by Kunzang Norbu Bhutia, class XII and Suzong Lepcha, class XI. They played their first game today against Christ School, Shillong and won the contesting match by one point. The score was 24-23 in favour of the Sikkim school with Choppel Lepcha scoring 11 points. They will be playing the quarterfinals today evening.
The tournament was inaugurated on Friday by CBSE director K.K. Chowdhury. Over 24 schools are participating in the under-17 and under-19 categories.
Team manager Namgyal Sherpa and Pem Choden Lepcha and principal Sidharth Yonzone are escorting the teams as coaches.
