The winners of each category will also represent the State at national and international level competitions.
The State Open Swimming Championship is an annual event of SASA.
SASA president Kuber Bhandari said the championship was started in 2004 with an aim to build up a competitive spirit among the swimmers in the State and prepare them for regional, national and international competitions.
“Swimming is an upcoming sport in the State as we are happy to see a rise in the number of participants, especially youth, this year. We will be able to produce more good swimmers from the State,” added Bhandari.
The SASA president also mentioned that the sport of swimming presently lacks infrastructure in the State. “The main problem is that swimming is a seasonal sport in Sikkim. We need to send our swimmers outside the State because we don’t have heated pools for swimmers to train during winter.”
The concluding day was attended by Education minister Kunga Nima Lepcha as the chief guest and MLA Bishnu Kumar Khatiwara as the guest of honour. Former Indian football captain Bhaichung Bhutia was also present.
The inaugural event on Saturday was attended by Forest minister Karma Loday Bhutia as the chief guest and Sikkim Olympics Association president B.K. Roka and general secretary Jas Lal Pradhan as the guests of honour.
