Inspection of MG Marg shops, eateries by Health dept KUNALRAI

GANGTOK:State Health department officials today carried out massive inspection and enforcement of Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act along with sanitation in kitchens and checking of restaurants, hotels and other business establishment along the entire M.G.Marg here.The inspection was initiated under the Healthadditional directorDr.Baroon Subba along with other officials in two groups.
Dr.Subba said the checking was a routine activity of the Health department initiated since 2010. “We want to carry out the enforcement and implementation of Acts strictly and also generate awareness amongst the masses on ill-effect of the use of tobacco in all forms,” he said adding the similar checks would be conducted across the State.
“In case we find any violation of any clause of the COTP Act, 2003 we will definitely take action as per the Act. Smoking in public place is an offence and if caught the person violating the same is liable to be punished as per the provision laid in the Act. It is not just smoking, the State has also put a ban on the non-smoking form of tobacco as well like Guthka, Zarda and any shop, establishment found selling or violating the act will be fined orchallaned as per the Act,” he added.
The departments authorized to take action with regard smoking in public place and selling of non-smoking tobacco items are Urban Development, Rural Development, Police and Education departments.
Subba mentioned that the department wants to institutionalize activity to curb the use of unhealthy tobacco products in the State as these products are harmful to human and leads to numerous life taking diseases.
