Sports department chalks out dates for annual school competitions SE Report

GANGTOK: Sports minister Kunga Nima Lepcha on Thursday chaired a Sports department coordination meeting.
The meeting held at the conference hall of Paljor Stadium here was attended by Sports secretary Kuber Bhandari, director, joint directors, Sports department officials from headquarter, districts, BACs and physical education teachers.
During the meeting, the department chalked out dates for the annual school sports competitions to be organized during October-November in 33 blocks across four districts.
The competition will have eight sports discipline, namely, athletics, archery, taekwondo, football, athletics, badminton, boxing and table tennis. Students from junior high schools to senior secondary schools will be participating in these competitions. The selected players will participate at national level competitions.
The department also decided to conduct a talent hunt programme in 10 sports disciplines, namely, athletics, archery, badminton, boxing, football, karate, table tennis, taekwondo, whu-shu and swimming, in which 200 talented players will be selected at State-level after four district level selection trials. A 10-day residential coaching camp will be organized at Gangtok to groom their talents.
The coaches of the department will further groom them and the most talented will be inducted in the sports academies.
During the meeting, the minister directed all the officers and PETs of the department to work sincerely and with all dedication for the benefit of sportspersons and public at large. He stressed on mass participation and maintaining the diaries for recording daily activities.
The secretary suggested all the officers and PETs to work with dedication and sincerity and further suggested that talents of age group of 7-12 be identified.
