Chief Minister P.S. Golay is likely to take the oath as an elected member of the Sikkim Legislative Assembly on November 4. Newly elected BJP legislators Y.T. Lepcha (Gangtok) and SonamVenchungpa (Martam-Rumtek) would also be affirmed as Legislative Assembly members on that day.
Interestingly, the two newly elected BJP legislators would be taking their seats in the Treasury bench and sharing the space reserved for the ruling SKM party in the House.
Lepcha and Venchungpa had been backed by the SKM in the bye-elections as per the SKM-BJP electoral alliance.
“The two elected BJP MLAs from Gangtok and Martam-Rumtek will sit in the Treasury bench. We can share this without any hesitation. They are the original BJP MLAs having won the bye-elections and we will share all things with them. There is no doubt on this,” said SKM spokesperson Jacob Khaling to a question in a press meethere on Friday.
The BJP has 12 MLAs in the Assembly. Among them, 10 MLAs had joined the BJP earlier this year though they were elected on SDF tickets. The remaining two are Lepcha and Venchungpa who contested the bye-elections on October 21 and won from their respective constituencies.
Asked about the remaining 10 MLAs from the BJP, the SKM spokesperson maintained that the 10 BJP MLAs still carry the ‘SDF tag’ which gives enough room for doubts on their political affiliations.
Khaling pointed to a recent public statement of Tadong MLA G.T. Dhungel – who also won from a SDF ticket but later joined the SKM.
“Dhungel, in his public speech on October 18 at Kamrang, had clearly stated before the gathering that SDF president Pawan Chamling had sent the SDFMLAs to the BJP. Dhungel was also directed to join the BJP but he did not. There is also a social media video wherein a SDF legislator has admitted that he and others joined BJP as per Chamling’s direction,” said Khaling.
“So, considering all this, they (the 10 BJP MLAs) are still SDFMLAsas that ‘SDF tag’ is there. Yes, they have shifted their place but as long as the anti-people SDF cloak is there, there is no question of an understanding them. We have already communicated this to the BJP leadership that we will not compromise on this,” said the SKM spokesperson.
Regarding the SKM-BJP relationship in the post-poll scenario, Khaling said the alliance was for seat sharing in the elections. The SKM and BJP will work together, a good bridge of trust has been created between the State government and Centre, he said.
Khaling stressed that there would be no change in the SKM government cabinet structure. “Our clear statement is that there will be no change in the cabinet structure, the existing cabinet is the government,” he said.
