Ex-CM calls for a shift from ‘banking’ model of education to life-oriented learning

GANGTOK,: SDF president Pawan Chamling, in his Teachers’ Day message, emphasized the crucial role the teachers play in shaping the future leaders of the nation.

In a SDF release, Chamling said, “Through their dedication, passion and hard work, a new generation of young minds are nurtured. The role of a teacher is not just to teach the content of books and ensure that students get their degrees on time; their real role is to uplift humanity through their work.”

He stressed that teachers should serve as examples of good human beings themselves. “They are candles who burn themselves to give light to others. To become great teachers, they have to become that candle which illuminates and not just teach that a candle gives light,” he said.

The former Chief Minister expressed his concern about the prevalent “banking model of education” in the State and the nation where students are passive recipients of information. He called for a radical shift towards life-oriented learning, aiming to produce not only highly educated individuals but also capable, skilled and good human beings who contribute to the betterment of humanity.

“It is also through teachers and their meaningful engagement with students that ideas of equality, camaraderie and democracy are instilled in our societies,” Chamling adding that the teachers’ role in nation-building is immensely significant.

Additionally, Chamling paid homage to former President of India, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, on whose birth anniversary the Teachers’ Day in celebrated.
